Literary Career
Weiskopf's literary career began in 1923 with the publication of a collection of revolutionary poems. In 1927, he published his seminal book "Transplantation to the 21st Century" (translated into Russian in 1928), which chronicled his travels in the Soviet Union.
Political Involvement and Anti-Fascism
Weiskopf was a committed communist and actively opposed fascism. After the rise of the Nazis in Germany, he emigrated to Czechoslovakia in 1933 and later to the United States in 1939.
Diplomatic Career and Return to Germany
After World War II, Weiskopf served as Czechoslovakia's ambassador to the United States, Sweden, and China. In 1953, he returned to Germany and settled in the German Democratic Republic (GDR).
Anti-Fascist Novels
Weiskopf's most notable works were his anti-fascist novels, which exposed the horrors of Nazi oppression. Notable examples include "Temptation" (1937), "Dawn Breaks" (1942), "Punitive Expedition" (1944), and "Twilight Over the Danube" (1946).
Literary Criticism and Legacy
In addition to his novels, Weiskopf also wrote extensively on German anti-fascist literature. His book "Under Foreign Skies" (1947) examined the literary output of German exiles during the Nazi era.
Death and Recognition
Weiskopf passed away on September 14, 1955, in Berlin. His literary legacy continues to be celebrated in the GDR, where the Franz Carl Weiskopf Literary Prize was established in his honor. His collected works have been published in several volumes, and some of his novels have been translated into English and other languages.
