Francesco Misiano: A Stalwart of the Italian and International Labor Movement

Born on 26th June 1884, in Ardore, Calabria, Francesco Misiano dedicated his life to the cause of the Italian and international labor movement.

Early Career in the Italian Socialist Party

In 1907, Misiano joined the Italian Socialist Party (PSI). He quickly ascended the ranks, becoming the secretary of the socialist federation and railway workers' union in Naples from 1908 to 1914.

World War I and Exile

When Italy entered World War I in 1916, Misiano refused to partake in the conflict. He emigrated to Switzerland, where he became the editor of "L'Avvenire del Lavoratore," a publication for Italian socialists in exile.

Propaganda in Soviet Russia

In 1918, Misiano traveled to Soviet Russia to promote socialist ideals among Italian troops stationed on the Murmansk front. During a stopover in Berlin, he participated in the January 1919 uprising, leading to his arrest and 10-year prison sentence by German authorities.

Liberation and Return to Italy

Following a campaign of protests by Italian workers and the intervention of German left-wing social democrats, Misiano was released and returned to Italy. He became a prominent advocate for a revolutionary renewal of the PSI and helped found the Italian Communist Party (PCd'I) in 1921, serving on its Central Committee.

Persecution and Exile

In 1921, Misiano was elected to the Italian parliament but was stripped of his mandate and sentenced to 10 years in prison due to pressure from the extreme right. Acting on the instructions of the PCd'I, he emigrated once more.

Emigrant Life and International Labor Leadership

During his exile, Misiano resided in Germany and later in the Soviet Union. He served as a member of the Executive Committee of the Profintern, the international trade union organization, and as a representative of the International Red Aid in the USSR.

Death in Moscow

Francesco Misiano passed away in Moscow on 16th August 1936, leaving behind a legacy as a dedicated fighter for the rights of the working class in Italy and around the world.
