Franz Philipp von Lamberg

Early Life and Military Service

Franz Philipp von Lamberg was born into an Austrian aristocratic family. In 1810, he commenced his military career as a lieutenant in the 3rd Uhlan Regiment. He actively participated in the War of the Sixth Coalition against Napoleonic France from 1813 to 1814.

Career Progression

During the peaceful period that followed, Lamberg steadily rose through the ranks, reaching the rank of Field Marshal Lieutenant in 1842, after 32 years of service.

Appointment in Hungary

In September 1848, Emperor Ferdinand appointed Lamberg as imperial commissioner and commander-in-chief in Hungary. However, the Hungarian National Assembly denounced this appointment as illegitimate.

Assassination and Outbreak of War

On September 28, an angry mob stormed the bridge across the Danube, where Lamberg was attempting to cross. They brutally murdered him, triggering the outbreak of the Hungarian War. Lamberg's assassination became a pivotal event, leading to the uprising against Austrian rule.
