Early Career and Success with Wiener
Josef Cesar, an Austrian-born Czechoslovakian footballer, began his professional career with Hertha Wien in Austria's second division. In 1927, Hertha was promoted to the top flight, and Cesar immediately made an impact, finishing as the club's leading scorer with 16 goals. His impressive performances caught the attention of Wiener, one of Austria's leading clubs.
In 1929, Cesar joined Wiener, where he played as a winger. During his time with Wiener, he won the Austrian Cup in 1931. The competition was played in a group format, and Wiener narrowly edged out Wiener Austria by a single point. This victory earned Wiener a place in the Mitropa Cup, where they surprisingly reached the final. However, they were defeated 3-5 by another Austrian club, First Vienna. In the semi-finals of the tournament, Cesar scored a goal against Prague's Sparta.
The following year, Wiener reached the Austrian Cup final again, but this time they were defeated 6-1 by Admira Wien. In 1935, Cesar left Wiener and embarked on a journey abroad.
International Career
Despite primarily playing as a forward for his clubs, Cesar was deployed as a defender for the Austrian national team. He made his debut for Austria on October 1, 1933, in a match against Hungary that ended 2-2. Cesar played a pivotal role in Austria's remarkable run to the final of the 1934 World Cup. The semi-final against Italy was his last international appearance.
Later Career and Retirement
After leaving Wiener, Cesar briefly played for Moravska Ostrava in Czechoslovakia. He then moved to France to join Metz before returning to Czechoslovakia, where he finished his career with Prostejov.
