Franz Xaver von Andlaw-Birseck: German Diplomat and Memoirist
Early Life and EducationBorn on October 6, 1799, in Freiburg, Germany, Franz Xaver von Andlaw-Birseck hailed from the aristocratic Andlaw family. He studied law in his hometown, Landshut, and Heidelberg. After completing his education, he embarked on extensive travels through Italy, France, and England.
Diplomatic Career
In 1824, Andlaw-Birseck joined the Foreign Ministry in Karlsruhe. From 1826 to 1830, he served at the Baden embassy in Vienna. Subsequently, he was appointed as an embassy counselor in Paris. In 1832-1835, he returned to Vienna as a member of the embassy.
Counselor and Minister
In 1836-1837, Andlaw-Birseck held the position of Counselor in the Foreign Ministry in Karlsruhe. In 1838, he was appointed as the Baden Minister-Resident in Munich, and in 1843, in Paris.
Ambassador to Vienna
Upon his return from Paris in 1846, Andlaw-Birseck was appointed as the Extraordinary Ambassador to Vienna. He held this post until 1856, with a brief interruption during the French Revolution of 1848.
Retirement and Later Years
In 1856, Andlaw-Birseck retired from public service. He resided primarily in Baden-Baden and passed away on September 4, 1876, in Bad Homburg.
