Early Life and Education
Born in Fürstenwalde, Germany, Franziska Giffey completed her high school education at Werner-Seelenbinder-Gymnasium in 1997. She initially pursued a teaching degree in English and French at Humboldt University of Berlin. However, after being diagnosed with a weak larynx, she switched to a management and law program at the Berlin Institute for Applied Sciences, graduating in 2001.
Giffey furthered her education with a Master's degree in European Business Administration (2003-2005) and a doctorate (2005-2009) from the Otto Suhr Institute at the Free University of Berlin, specializing in the Europeanization of citizenship.
Political Career
In 2007, Giffey joined the Social Democratic Party (SPD). She served as Neukölln's district councilor responsible for education, culture, and sports from 2010. On April 15, 2015, she became mayor of Neukölln, a district in Berlin known for its challenges, including immigration, crime, and the rise of the far-right Alternative for Germany party.
Cabinet Appointment and Controversy
On March 14, 2018, Giffey was appointed Minister for Family, Senior Citizens, Women, and Youth in Angela Merkel's fourth government. On November 13, 2020, she was forced to relinquish her doctorate due to plagiarism allegations.
Personal Life
Franziska Giffey is related to famous basketball player Niels Giffey, who has played for the German national team.
