Jacques Doriot: A Controversial Figure in French Politics
Early Life and Political BeginningsJacques Doriot's political journey began in 1915 when he joined the French Socialist Party. He quickly aligned himself with the party's left wing, which eventually formed the French Communist Party (FCP) in 1920.
Ascendancy in the French Communist Party
Doriot rose through the ranks of the FCP, holding leadership positions from 1924 to 1933. During this period, he also served as the mayor of Saint-Dizier from 1931.
Ideological Shift and Expulsion from the FCP
In 1931, Doriot began advocating for an alliance between communists and French fascists, drawing the ire of his party. His anti-party activities led to his expulsion from the FCP in 1934.
Formation of the French Popular Party
Undeterred, Doriot established the French Popular Party on the eve of World War II. This far-right organization collaborated closely with the Nazis.
Collaboration with the Nazis
During the war, Doriot joined the "French Legion of Volunteers Against Bolshevism," an organization formed by German and French collaborationists. He fled to Germany after the Allied invasion of France.
Downfall and Death
Doriot's life ended tragically when he was killed during a bombing raid in Germany towards the end of the war. His political legacy remains a subject of controversy to this day.
