Early Life and Political Activism

Monica Fein, an Argentine biochemist and socialist politician, was born in Luján, Buenos Aires Province. Her political activism began at the young age of 17, when she joined the Socialist Party of Argentina. While studying biochemistry at the National University of Rosario, Fein held various leadership roles in student organizations, including the National Reform Movement.

Medical Career

After graduating with a degree in biochemistry, Fein pursued postgraduate studies in public health at the Lasarte Institute. In 1992, she played a key role in establishing the Generic Drug Laboratory (LEM) in Rosario. LEM became a national model for public production of medicines.

Appointed director of the Municipal Health Department in 1995, Fein implemented initiatives to strengthen food safety standards through the development of the Food Institute. In 1997, she became Secretary of Health for Rosario under Socialist mayor Hermes Binner. Her tenure saw the expansion of the local emergency healthcare network, improved hospital standards, and the launch of the Rosario Ambulatory Medical Specialties Center (CEMAR).

Political Career

In 2001, Fein led the Socialist Party's electoral list for the Rosario City Council, where she served as chairwoman of the Health Commission. Under the next Socialist mayor, Miguel Lifschitz, she continued as Secretary of Health. Her leadership in the construction of the new Martin Maternity Hospital was recognized by the World Health Organization.

Elected to the Argentine Chamber of Deputies in 2007, Fein represented the Progressive, Civic, and Social Front. She chaired the Socialist Party bloc and played a prominent role in health and social welfare committees.

Mayorship

In 2011, Fein became the first female Socialist mayor in Argentina's history. She won the Rosario mayoral election with 52.2% of the vote. During her tenure, she focused on improving public services, promoting social justice, and enhancing the city's environmental sustainability.
