Early Years and Dancing CareerFred 'Rerun' Berry was born in St. Louis, Missouri, in 1951. He first made his mark in show business as a member of the Los Angeles dance troupe 'The Lockers.' Known for their distinctive style, including striped socks, suspenders, and oversized hats, the Lockers performed alongside legendary artists such as Bill Cosby and Stevie Wonder, even opening for Frank Sinatra. Fred's dancing soon landed him on the popular dance program 'Soul Train,' where he earned the nickname 'Penguin' for his signature moves.
Film and Television Breakthrough
Berry made his film debut in 1972's crime drama 'Hammer,' although his role was uncredited and primarily involved dancing. In 1976, he achieved his breakthrough role as Fred 'Rerun' Stubbs in the iconic comedy series 'What's Happening!!' The show skyrocketed him to stardom and became synonymous with his character. After 'What's Happening!!' ended in 1979, Berry struggled to find work outside of his iconic role, despite his appearance in other projects such as 'Alice' and 'Vice Squad.'
Personal Struggles and Religious Conversion
In the 1980s, Berry faced significant personal struggles with alcohol and substance abuse. However, he credits the 1985 spin-off series 'What's Happening Now!!' with helping him turn his life around. In the 1990s, Berry converted to Christianity and became a Baptist. He also developed diabetes and lost approximately 45 kg due to the illness.

Fred Berry was married and divorced six times, including three marriages to the same woman, Francesca Berry. The couple had three children together.

Despite his association with 'Rerun,' Berry continued acting throughout his career, appearing in films and television shows such as 'In the Hood,' 'Martin,' 'Scrubs,' and 'Dickie Roberts: Former Child Star.'
