Early Life
Jason Statham was born on July 26, 1967, in Shirebrook, Derbyshire, England. His father, Barry Statham, was a street vendor, and his mother, Eileen Statham, was a tailor who later became a dancer.
Athletic Pursuits
Jason's father worked various jobs, including as a painter, miner, and even a singer in the Canary Islands. After moving to Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, Jason developed a passion for martial arts and soccer. He played football for his school team from 1978-1983. Around the same time, he also started diving and achieved significant success, participating in the Seoul Olympics in 1988 and representing Great Britain in the 1990 Commonwealth Games and the 1992 World Diving Championships.
Modeling and Acting Breakthrough
Statham's athletic career served as a stepping stone to modeling. He was spotted by a representative of Sports Promotions modeling agency while training at London's Crystal Palace National Sports Centre. Statham's modeling career began with sports apparel ads, but he later became the face of campaigns for brands such as Tommy Hilfiger, Levi's, Griffin, and French Collection. He also appeared in music videos for The Shamen's "Comin' On" (1993), Erasure's "Run to the Sun" (1994), and The Beautiful South's "Dream a Little Dream of Me" (1995).
French Collection's brand representative recommended Statham to British director Guy Ritchie for a role in his upcoming film, "Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels" (1998). Cast as a street vendor, Statham's performance in a casting session where he successfully convinced Ritchie to buy fake jewelry secured him the role.
Film Career
After the critical success of "Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels," Statham's career took off. He starred in another Guy Ritchie film, "Snatch" (2000), and went on to appear in various projects, with varying degrees of success. Most notably, Statham has starred in films such as "The Transporter" (2002), "Crank" (2006), "The Expendables" (2010), "The Mechanic" (2011), "The Expendables 3" (2014), "Furious 7" (2015), and "Spy" (2015).
Personal Life
Statham was in a seven-year relationship with model and actress Kelly Brook, which ended in 2004. He had a brief romance with Australian singer, actress, and model Sophie Monk while filming "London." In April 2010, Statham began dating British supermodel Rosie Huntington-Whiteley. The couple became engaged on January 10, 2016, and welcomed their first child, Jack Oscar Statham, on June 24, 2017.
Upcoming Projects
Statham has several upcoming projects in the pipeline, all of them action-packed. In August 2018, "The Meg" will be released, a sci-fi horror film in which Statham plays a paleontologist who must save the crew of a deep-sea station from a giant extinct shark, the Megalodon. Other projects in development include the TV series "Viva Madness!" and the comedy action film "Spy 2," a sequel to the 2015 comedy. One of the most highly anticipated upcoming Statham films is "Hobbs and Shaw," a spin-off of the "Fast & Furious" franchise, which will see Statham reprise his role as Deckard Shaw alongside Dwayne Johnson as Luke Hobbs and Vanessa Kirby as Hattie Shaw.
