Biography of Fred Francis Marsh

Fred Francis Marsh, also known as Freddie, was born on January 5, 1924, in Valley Falls, Kansas. He was an American athlete and baseball player who played as an infielder in the Major League Baseball (MLB). Standing at a height of 178 cm and weighing 81.5 kg, Marsh played for various teams in his career, including the Cleveland Indians, St. Louis Browns, Washington Senators, Chicago White Sox, and Baltimore Orioles.

Marsh completed his education at Charles P. Steinmetz Academic Centre in 1941. At the age of 18, he signed a contract with the Chicago Cubs, but his baseball career was put on hold when he joined the military. Marsh served in the navy and was discharged in 1945.

On April 19, 1949, Marsh made his debut in the MLB, playing for the Cleveland Indians. However, he had limited opportunities to showcase his skills during his time with the team. In 1951, Marsh joined the St. Louis Browns, playing in 130 games and achieving a .243 batting average, including four home runs and 43 runs batted in (RBI).

The following season, Marsh started with the St. Louis Browns but was traded to the Washington Senators in May. Unfortunately, his performance with the Senators was not satisfactory, and he was eventually traded back to the Browns. Marsh's season improved after returning to the Browns, with a batting average of .287 in 76 games.

On January 20, 1953, Marsh was sold to the Chicago White Sox. In his first year with the team, he played 68 games and achieved a .200 batting average. However, his performance improved in 1954, with a .306 batting average in 62 games. Despite this success, Marsh was traded to the Baltimore Orioles in December of that year.

In 1955, Marsh played 89 games for the Orioles, recording 66 hits with a .218 batting average. Unfortunately, he missed almost half of the season due to injuries. The 1956 season marked Marsh's last season in the MLB, and he played his final game on May 29. Throughout his career, he played a total of 465 games with a .239 batting average, including 296 hits, 43 doubles, 8 triples, and 10 home runs.

After retiring from baseball, Fred Marsh worked as a mailman in Corry, Pennsylvania, for many years. He passed away on October 26, 2006, at the age of 82 and was buried at Pine Grove Cemetery in Corry.
