Early Life and Education
Frédérique Vidal was born in Nice, France. She earned a Master's degree in Biochemistry (1988) and a PhD in Biology (1993) from the University of Nice. She also holds a Diploma of Advanced Studies (DEA) in Fundamental Virology from the Pasteur Institute.
Academic Career
In 1995, Vidal began her academic career at the University of Nice as a Lecturer (Maître de Conférences). She held various leadership positions within the university, including Deputy Director of the Master's Program in Biology (2004), Head of the Department of Biology (2004-2008), and Dean of the Faculty of Science (2008-2012). Vidal's research focused on molecular genetics. From 2012 to 2016, she served as President of the University of Nice.
University Leadership and Controversies
During her tenure as President of the University of Nice, Vidal supported a controversial French government circular that allowed non-EU foreign students to remain in France after completing their studies. She also advocated for funding to study "Islamo-leftism" in French universities, sparking national debate about the political appropriateness and compatibility with democracy.
Political Career
On May 17, 2017, Vidal was appointed Minister of Higher Education, Research and Innovation in the government of Édouard Philippe. She retained this position in the second Philippe government formed on June 21, 2017. In the subsequent government of Jean Castex formed on July 6, 2020, Vidal continued to serve as Minister of Higher Education. Her term ended on May 20, 2022, with the formation of the government of Élisabeth Borne.
Honors
Vidal was awarded the Chevalier of the Legion of Honor by the French President in 2013.
