Biography of Frank James
Frank James, born Alexander Franklin James on January 10, 1843, in Missouri, was one of the most famous outlaws in the American West and the older brother of Jesse James, another notorious bandit of their time. He was the first of three children born to Robert James and his wife, Zerelda Cole. Frank was commonly known as Alexander, even before he embarked on his career as an outlaw.
Early Life and Education
As a child, James developed an interest in the books stored in his father's library. He would read them voraciously and excelled in school. He even aspired to become a teacher. However, in 1861, the American Civil War broke out, and Missouri became a battleground. In May of that year, eighteen-year-old Frank James joined the army and actively participated in the hostilities. He found himself in numerous dangerous situations throughout the war.
Outlaw Years
Unfortunately, Frank fell seriously ill and was granted permission to return home. However, he was unable to do so. James was arrested and later joined the guerrilla fighters. The war was brutal, marked by atrocities, sadism, and constant mistreatment between the warring sides.
After the war ended, Frank James, like his brother Jesse, turned to a life of crime. He robbed banks and committed other illegal acts. From 1868 to 1876, there were numerous deaths attributed to his actions.
Naturally, the authorities made every effort to apprehend the lawbreakers. In September 1876, a massive crackdown took place in Minnesota, resulting in the capture of a significant portion of the gang. Frank was caught during this operation.
Later Life
For the next thirty years, Frank James worked in various occupations, including selling shoes and working as a security guard. In the early 1900s, he worked at a racetrack in New Orleans. In his final years, Frank James passed away on February 18, 1915. He sold tickets to the James Farm, where visitors could learn about the truth behind the Civil War in North America and its history for a fee. Interestingly, the farm remained in the possession of the James family until the late 1970s. It was completely destroyed but later rebuilt and continues to operate to this day.
