Duke August of Württemberg: A Prussian and German Military Leader
Early Life and Royal LineageBorn on September 4, 1843, August was the third son of Duke Paul Karl Friedrich August of Württemberg and Princess Charlotte of Saxe-Altenburg. His elder brother was Grand Duchess Elena Pavlovna of Russia, wife of Grand Duke Michael Pavlovich of Russia.
Military Career in Prussia
In 1831, August joined the Prussian army as a captain in the Leib Guard Regiment. He swiftly rose through the ranks, becoming commander of the Guard Corps in 1858 and a general of the cavalry the following year.
Austo-Prussian War of 1866
During the Austro-Prussian War, August participated in the battles of Gervenagora, Soor, and Königinhof. His decisive attack on the enemy's right flank and capture of Chlum played a significant role in the Prussian victory at the Battle of Königgrätz.
Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71
In the Franco-Prussian War, August's corps served under the command of Prince Friedrich-Karl of Prussia and later the Saxon Crown Prince. He distinguished himself in the Battle of Gravelotte, where he fought valiantly at St. Privat, despite heavy losses. He also participated in the Battle of Sedan and the Siege of Paris.
Post-War Service
After the war, August briefly served as governor of Berlin. In 1873, he was promoted to general adjutant of the cavalry and general field marshal. One of the forts in Metz was named after him.
Commander of Border Troops
On June 13, 1878, August was appointed commander-in-chief of the border troops. He held this position until his death on December 27, 1917, at the age of 74.
