Friedrich August von Kaulbach: The Art and Life of a German Painter

Friedrich August von Kaulbach was a renowned German artist who left a lasting legacy in the art world.

Early Life and Education

Born into a family of artists, Kaulbach began his training at the Nuremberg Academy of Arts under the tutelage of Kreling and Raupp. Later, he honed his skills under the guidance of his father, Friedrich Kaulbach.

Artistic Journeys

In 1871, Kaulbach relocated to Munich, where he further developed his craft. His travels extended to Paris, where he encountered influential artistic currents.

Career and Accomplishments

In 1886, Kaulbach was appointed as the Director of the Munich Academy of Arts. His daughter, Mathilde Kaulbach, later became the wife of artist Max Beckmann.

The Artist's Retreat

Kaulbach established a summer house in Ohlstadt, Upper Bavaria, where he spent his twilight years. This residence has been transformed into a museum since 1997, showcasing approximately 30 paintings and 25 drawings by the artist.

Artistic Satire and Legacy

Kaulbach's keen wit manifested in his numerous caricatures. He frequently satirized members of the "Allotria" artistic group, founded by Franz von Lenbach in opposition to the official art establishment in Munich. Kaulbach's humorous "Lenbachiad" is a testament to his critique of the acclaimed Lenbach.
