Otto von Cochenhausen
Otto von Cochenhausen was a German military officer, writer, and major general.
Early Life and Education
Born in Freiburg, von Cochenhausen attended Freiburg Gymnasium and studied law at the University of Strasbourg. He later enrolled in the military school at Hersfeld in 1884 and served in the army.
Military Career
In 1901, von Cochenhausen entered the Military Academy in Berlin, graduating in 1905 as a lieutenant. He served in command positions from 1906 to 1913. In August 1913, he was assigned to the General Staff and appointed intelligence officer for the General Command of the 1st Army Corps.
World War I
During World War I, von Cochenhausen served as deputy to Walter Nicolai, the head of German military intelligence. He played a key role in coordinating and directing espionage and counterintelligence operations.
Post-War Career
After the war, von Cochenhausen led the military intelligence service from 1919 to 1927. He then retired and devoted his time to researching German intelligence history. He published a 12-volume work entitled "Military Intelligence and Counterintelligence."
Nazi Era
In 1942, von Cochenhausen served as a judge for the "People's Court." He was detained in 1946 and died in prison in 1947.
Rehabilitation
In 2001, the Russian military prosecutor's office recognized that von Cochenhausen had been politically persecuted and acquitted him posthumously.
