German chess player and grandmaster, Wolfgang Unzicker, made significant contributions to opening theory with his variations in the Nimzowitsch Defense and Old Indian Defense, both known as the Ziemiss systems.
Tournament Record
Unzicker holds a unique record in the chess world. At the 1969 Lone Pine International tournament, he astonishingly lost on time in all 13 of his games, the most time forfeit losses in a single tournament according to the Guinness Book of World Records (1987).
