Early Life and Education
Moritz Carrière was a German philosopher and historian of philosophy. Born in 1817, he studied under the philosopher Friedrich Eduard Beneke.
Academic Career
In 1852, Carrière began teaching at the University of Bonn, and in 1868 he moved to the University of Königsberg.
Philosophical System
Carrière's philosophical system, outlined in his influential "System of Logic and History of Logical Doctrines," aimed to find a middle ground between subjective-formal logic (Kant, Herbart) and metaphysical logic (Hegel). He followed Aristotle's approach and sought to continue the tradition of Schleiermacher, Ritter, Trendelenburg, and Beneke. Carrière called his system "ideal-realism."
Naturalism and Materialism
In psychology, Carrière initially supported naturalism. However, influenced by his close association with the philosopher Ludwig Büchner, he adopted a materialistic worldview, which he expressed in letters.
Historical Works
Carrière's most notable work was his "Outline of the History of Philosophy," published in seven editions between 1863 and 1888. It was renowned for its extensive bibliographical references. The work was translated into several languages, including Russian, where it was partially translated by N.F. Fokkov and Ya.N. Kolubovsky.
Other Works
Other notable works by Carrière include "On the Authenticity and Chronology of Plato's Writings" (1861), where he questioned the authenticity of the dialogue "Parmenides," and "Schiller as Historian and Philosopher" (1884).
Legacy
Carrière's contributions to philosophy and history of philosophy were significant. His work helped bridge the gap between rationalism and empiricism, and his historical writings provided a comprehensive overview of philosophical thought.
