Cardinal Friedrich Wetter
Early Life and OrdinationFriedrich Wetter was born in Landau in der Pfalz, Germany on February 20, 1928. He was ordained a priest on October 29, 1953, by Bishop Joseph Wendel.
Bishop of Speyer
Wetter served as Bishop of Speyer from May 28, 1968, to October 28, 1982. During his tenure, he actively participated in the Second Vatican Council (1962-1965) and played a key role in implementing its reforms within the diocese.
Archbishop of Munich and Freising
On October 28, 1982, Wetter was appointed Archbishop of Munich and Freising. As the head of one of the largest archdioceses in Germany, he oversaw a period of significant growth and development. Wetter was a strong advocate for social justice and interreligious dialogue.
Cardinal-Priest
Pope John Paul II elevated Wetter to the College of Cardinals on May 25, 1985, with the title of Cardinal-Priest of Santo Stefano al Monte Celio. As a cardinal, Wetter served as a close advisor to the Pope on various issues, including canon law and ecumenism.
Apostolic Administrator and Retirement
