Fritz van den Berghe was a Belgian artist known for his contributions to the Impressionist and Expressionist movements. Born in Ghent, Belgium, in 1883, he studied painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in his hometown. Graduating in 1904, he relocated to the Flemish town of Sint-Martens-Latem, where he joined a colony of painters and the artistic Latem School.
Impressionism and Early Career
In the early stages of his career, Van den Berghe painted in an Impressionist style, capturing the fleeting moments of light and color. However, the outbreak of World War I in 1914 forced him, like many other Sint-Martens-Latem artists, to flee to the Netherlands.
Expressionism and War's Influence
Under the influence of his close friend Gustave de Smet, Van den Berghe transitioned to Expressionism. This shift marked a departure into more somber and pessimistic works, reflecting the horrors of the war. Beginning in 1916, he created a series of dark and anguished paintings.
Post-War Return and Themes
Returning to Brussels in 1922, Van den Berghe's palette and mood lightened. He began painting in more vibrant tones, capturing joyful and humorous scenes. A recurrent theme of his work during this period became the depiction of the nude female body.
