Freddy Klein: A Pioneering Bisexuality Advocate
Freddy Klein was an Austrian-born American sexologist, psychiatrist, and author who made significant contributions to the understanding of human sexuality.
Early Life and Education
Born in a Jewish family in Austria, Klein immigrated to New York with his family as a child to escape Nazi persecution. He graduated from Yeshiva University in 1953 and Columbia University in 1955. Klein then studied medicine in Switzerland for six years, earning his M.D. in 1961.
Career in Psychiatry
From the 1970s onwards, Klein practiced as a psychiatrist in New York City. In 1974, while struggling to find information on bisexuality in the New York Public Library, Klein placed an ad in the "Village Voice." This led to the formation of the first support group for bisexuals in the United States, the Bisexual Forum.
The Klein Grid
In the 1980s, Klein developed his own sexual orientation grid, known as the Klein Grid, which refined and expanded on the earlier Kinsey scale. This framework became a valuable tool for understanding the fluidity and diversity of human sexuality.
Publications and Advocacy
Klein published numerous books on bisexuality, including "The Bisexual Option" and "Bisexual Politics: Theories, Queries, and Analyses." He also founded and served as editor-in-chief of the "Journal of Bisexuality" until his passing.
Health and Legacy
In 2006, Klein was diagnosed with cancer and underwent surgery. He died at his home in San Diego on May 24, 2006, of cardiac arrest. Freddy Klein's groundbreaking work in the field of bisexuality has left a lasting legacy, raising awareness and providing support for a community that had long been marginalized.
