Biography of Fritz Zdunek
Fritz Zdunek was a German coach and former non-professional boxer. He was born in 1947 in Lüssow, a small town near the Baltic Sea, in what would soon become East Germany. Zdunek began his sporting career in non-professional boxing and achieved success by winning the middleweight division at the 1968 Student Championship of the GDR.
After winning 99 out of 129 fights, Zdunek decided to retire from his personal non-professional boxing career and pursue a new path as a coach. In 1979, he graduated from the Deutsche Hochschule für Körperkultur (German University of Physical Culture) with a degree in sports education.
From the 1960s onwards, Zdunek became a member of the sports club Traktor Schwerin, where he later worked as a coach until 1989. During his time there, he trained athletes such as Andreas Züllov, who won the lightweight division at the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul.
In March 1994, Zdunek began working as a coach with the renowned Hamburg-based boxing promoter organization, Universum Box-Promotion. Throughout his career, he trained numerous boxers, both professionals and amateurs. Notably, he worked with world champions such as the Klitschko brothers and Dariusz Michalczewski.
Fritz Zdunek is married and has two children, a son and a daughter. His daughter is married to Ahmet Öner, a German-Turkish boxing promoter and former professional boxer who is the head of Arena Box-Promotion.
