Fritz Sennheiser
Early Life and EducationFritz Sennheiser was born on May 9, 1912, in Berlin, Germany. Despite his father's aspirations for him to study landscape architecture, the economic crash of 1929 prompted him to pursue a more practical career. He enrolled at Berlin's Technical University, where he studied speech and music, interests he had nurtured since childhood.
Academic Career and Wartime Research
After obtaining his Ph.D., Sennheiser's research was interrupted by the outbreak of World War II. He continued his work as head of the Institute for Radio Frequency Engineering and Electroacoustics in Hanover. However, post-war funding cuts forced him to establish his own laboratory in a repurposed building in 1945.
Founding Sennheiser
Due to Allied restrictions on radio research in Germany, Sennheiser initially focused on producing millivoltmeters for Siemens. This led to an order for microphones, which he successfully fulfilled. In 1947, they released their own line of microphones, becoming popular with radio stations. This success enabled them to expand production to amplifiers, intercoms, transformers, and headphones.
Technological Innovations and Growth
Sennheiser's company became known for its innovations, including the first directional microphone and the first wireless microphone. By 1958, the company had grown to 450 employees and was renamed Sennheiser Electronic. Sales increased tenfold during the 1950s, but Sennheiser continued to find time to lecture at Hanover Technical University.
Signature Products and Success
In the 1960s, the studio microphone MD-421 was released, a model that remains popular today. In 1964, they introduced the first electrostatic directional microphone. The HD-414 open headphones, released in 1968, became a bestseller for the next decade, reportedly accounting for half the company's revenue.
Global Expansion
In the 1980s, Sennheiser's durable wireless microphones became ubiquitous in London and Broadway theater. Despite passing the torch to his son Jörg Sennheiser in 1982, the company maintained its leadership in the audio industry.
Legacy
Fritz Sennheiser remained an active innovator and leader until his death on May 17, 2010, just 12 days after his 98th birthday. His company, Sennheiser, continues to thrive as a testament to his ingenuity and contributions to the world of audio.
