Early Life and Education

Gabriela Martha Michetti Illia was born on May 28, 1965, in the city of Laprida, Buenos Aires province. She earned a degree in International Relations from the University of Salvador in Buenos Aires in 1988. She holds a master's degree in Business Management (1993-1994) and also studied Dispute Settlement at the WTO in Geneva, Switzerland (2000) and University Management at the University of Ottawa, Canada, in 2001.

Political Career

Provincial Government and Buenos Aires City

Michetti began her public service career in the Buenos Aires province in 1989 and became a technical advisor in the Ministry of Economy in 1990. She became involved in politics through social projects through the church, and later aligned with Carlos Auyero of the Christian Democratic Party and FREPASO. In 2003, she joined the Front for Commitment to Change (Frente Compromiso para el Cambio) led by Mauricio Macri.

Vice Mayor of Buenos Aires

In 2007, she ran for Vice Mayor of Buenos Aires with Macri, who was running for Mayor. They won with 61% of the vote, making Michetti the first woman to hold the position of Vice Mayor of Buenos Aires. She led two planning committees and the Committee for the Rehabilitation of People with Disabilities.

National Congress

In the 2009 elections for the Argentine National Congress, Michetti was touted as a potential candidate for a seat in the lower house of parliament. Her candidacy was considered unlikely until April 2009 due to the candidacies of other party members and her friendship with Elisa Carrió, leader of the rival Civic Coalition. However, on April 20, 2009, Michetti resigned as Vice Mayor of Buenos Aires and confirmed her candidacy for a seat in the Chamber of Deputies of Argentina.

Vice President of Argentina

Michetti declined Macri's initial offer to run as Vice President on his presidential ticket in 2015. She instead intended to run for Mayor of Buenos Aires but lost the primary election to Horacio Rodríguez Larreta. Eventually, she accepted Macri's offer and was nominated as Vice President for the Cambiemos opposition coalition. Macri and Michetti won the presidential runoff election on November 22, 2015. Michetti took office as Vice President on December 10, 2015.
