Biography of Andriy Klyuyev
Andriy Petrovych Klyuyev, a Ukrainian politician and statesman, was born on August 12, 1964, in Donetsk, Ukraine. He comes from a mining family.
Early Career
In 1983, Klyuyev started working as an underground miner at the Alexander Zasyadko Mine. Over the years, he held various positions in the mining industry, including apprentice, mining master, and deputy chief of the mining transport section at the Belorechenskaya Mine. In 1986, he graduated from Donetsk Polytechnic Institute with a degree in Automation and Comprehensive Mechanization of Mining. In 1989, Klyuyev defended his dissertation and obtained a candidate of technical sciences degree. He worked as an assistant at the Donetsk Polytechnic Institute until 1991.
Business and Political Career
From 1991 to 1994, Klyuyev held executive positions in several companies, including Technical Director of the "Shelf" association, President of the Joint-Stock Company "Promkomservice," and CEO of the Joint-Stock Company "Ukrpodshipnik." In 1994, he was appointed Deputy Chairman of the Donetsk Regional Council for Executive Work. In 1995, he became the Deputy Chairman of the Donetsk Regional State Administration, overseeing market development, privatization, economic reforms, and the coal industry.
In 1996, Klyuyev became the First Deputy Chairman of the Donetsk City Council. In 1998, he was appointed Deputy Chairman of the Donetsk Regional State Administration, responsible for political and legal work, territorial development, external economic relations, and consumer goods production.
In March 2002, Klyuyev was elected as a member of the Verkhovna Rada (Ukrainian Parliament) from the "For a United Ukraine!" election bloc in the Donetsk single-mandate district No. 46. He initially joined the "United Ukraine" faction but later switched to the "Party of Regions" faction and became the Chairman of the Committee on Fuel and Energy Complex, Nuclear Policy, and Nuclear Safety. In April 2003, he became the Secretary of the Political Council of the Party of Regions.
In December 2003, President Leonid Kuchma appointed Klyuyev as Deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine under Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovych. He was responsible for the fuel and energy complex. During the 2004 presidential election campaign, Klyuyev served as the head of Yanukovych's campaign headquarters. However, Yanukovych lost the election to Viktor Yushchenko during the "Orange Revolution," and Klyuyev resigned as Deputy Prime Minister in December 2004.
In May 2005, Klyuyev became the Deputy Chairman of the Party of Regions faction in the Verkhovna Rada.
Parliamentary Career
In spring 2006, Klyuyev was elected as a member of the Verkhovna Rada from the Party of Regions' list, ranking 14th. He joined the Committee on Fuel and Energy Complex, Nuclear Policy, and Nuclear Safety. In August 2006, he was appointed Deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine under Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovych, representing the Party of Regions. However, political tensions between the Party of Regions and the "Orange" coalition led to the early termination of the Verkhovna Rada's powers by President Yushchenko in April 2007.
On September 30, 2007, Klyuyev participated in the parliamentary elections in Ukraine. The Party of Regions won the most votes, but they were unable to form a majority coalition. Klyuyev became the Deputy Chairman of the Party of Regions faction in the Verkhovna Rada of the sixth convocation and joined the Committee on Legal Policy.
Throughout his career, Klyuyev has been involved in business activities, including owning a significant stake in the Donetsk Corporation "Ukrpodshipnik" and controlling the Austrian company SLAV Handel, Vertretung und Beteiligung AG, engaged in transit trade of metals, coal, and gas.
