Biography of Gad Elmaleh

Gad Elmaleh is a Franco-Moroccan actor and comedian. He gained recognition for his roles in the films "Midnight in Paris," which won an Oscar in 2012, and Steven Spielberg's "The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn," where he voiced the character of Ben Salaad.

Early Life and Education

Gad Elmaleh was born and raised in Casablanca, Morocco. He received his primary education at a school in the Maârif district and continued his studies at the Maimonides High School. He is the son of Moroccan Jews and is fluent in Arabic, French, and Hebrew. The name "Gad" means "joy" in Hebrew, and "Elmaleh" means "salty" in Arabic. However, initially, the surname was pronounced as "Elimeléch," which means "my God is king" in Hebrew (according to Gad, his relatives in Israel still carry the surname "Elimeléch"). His father, David Elmaleh, was a trader and practiced pantomime as a hobby.

Career

Gad Elmaleh had his first film role in the Algerian director Merzak Allouache's feature film "Hello Cousin!" in 1996. In 2005, he played the lead role in the film "Olé!" alongside renowned actor Gérard Depardieu. In 2006, his most commercially successful film, "Priceless," directed by Pierre Salvadori, was released, grossing $27 million. Elmaleh starred alongside actress Audrey Tautou in the film, playing the role of a butler and showcasing his talent as an excellent comedian with expressive, big eyes reminiscent of Buster Keaton.

Personal Life

Gad Elmaleh has a brother, Ari (born in 1975), who is also an actor in theater and film, and a sister, Judith. He has a son named Noé from his first marriage to actress Anne Brochet. He has been in a long-term relationship with Charlotte Casiraghi, the eldest daughter of Princess Caroline of Monaco and granddaughter of Grace Kelly. On December 17, 2013, Charlotte Casiraghi gave birth to their first child, a boy named Raphaël. As of 2014, the couple frequently spends time together with their older and younger sons, but they have no plans to officially marry.
