Saint Gaetano Catanoso

Gaetano Catanoso was an Italian Roman Catholic priest, the founder of the Catholic lay movement "Apostleship of the Holy Face" (1920) and the women religious institute "Daughters of St. Veronica, Missionaries of the Holy Face" (1934). He was ordained to the priesthood in 1902 and served as a parish priest from 1904 until 1921 while also publishing a periodical titled "The Holy Face."

Ministry and Founding

Catanoso held a deep devotion to the Holy Eucharist and the Blessed Virgin Mary, actively engaging in pastoral work. His primary focus was on catechesis and educational activities, particularly with children and youth. In 1920, he founded the movement dedicated to promoting devotion to the Holy Face.

Apostolate and Expansion

From 1921 to 1950, Catanoso served as a confessor in various religious congregations, a chaplain in hospitals, and a spiritual father in a seminary. In 1934, he established the Daughters of St. Veronica, a congregation of religious women whose mission centered on continuous prayer, catechesis, and assisting children, priests, and the elderly. The congregation's Statutes received diocesan approval in 1958.

Canonization

Catanoso's path to sainthood began when Pope John Paul II beatified him on May 4, 1997. On October 23, 2005, Pope Benedict XVI canonized him during the closing ceremony of the Year of the Eucharist in St. Peter's Square, Rome.
