Life and Early Career

Carlo Rezzonico was born in Venice, Italy. He pursued his education in Padua and began working in the Roman Curia. Pope Clement XII elevated him to Cardinal and Pope Benedict XIV appointed him Bishop of Padua.

Pontificate of Clement XIII

During the pontificate of Clement XIII, a conflict emerged regarding the Jesuit Order. The order's influence in royal courts created concerns among local clergy and political advisors across Europe.

Clement XIII faced an uncertain position. He hesitated to dissolve the order, as some expected, and attempted to postpone a decision through diplomatic efforts.

Condemnation of Febronianism

In 1764, Clement XIII condemned the work of Bishop Johann Nikolaus von Hontheim, who wrote under the pseudonym Justinus Febronius. Febronius's work criticized the supremacy of the Roman pontiff, reflecting the conciliarist doctrine. Febronianism gained support in Germany and Austria.
