In 2007, Assulin's potential caught the attention of English giants Chelsea, who expressed interest in signing him. In July 2009, he acquired Spanish citizenship in anticipation of a possible move to Chelsea. The same year, he was summoned to join the Barcelona first team under manager Pep Guardiola for pre-season training in England. His competitive debut for the club came in the Wembley Cup against Tottenham Hotspur, a match that ended in a 1-1 draw. Assulin also featured in the subsequent match, a 4-1 victory over Al-Ahli.
