Life and Career of Garcelle Beauvais-Nilon

Garcelle Beauvais-Nilon, an American actress and former model of Haitian descent, was born in Saint-Marc, Haiti, to Marie-Claire Beauvais and Axel Jean Pierre. After her parents' divorce at the age of seven, she relocated to Massachusetts with her mother and six siblings. She credits the educational television show "Sesame Street" with her eventual mastery of English.

Modeling Career

At age 16, Beauvais moved with her family to Miami. She attended North Miami Beach High School and Miami Norland High School before relocating to New York City at the age of 17 to pursue a modeling career. She signed with Ford Models and Irene Marie Models, and appeared in advertising campaigns for Avon, Mary Kay, and Clairol, as well as catalogs for Neiman Marcus and Nordstrom. In 2007, she posed nude for the August issue of Playboy. She has also walked runways for Calvin Klein and Isaac Mizrahi.

Acting Debut and Television Breakthrough

Beauvais' acting debut came in 1986 in Michael Mann's "Manhunter." Aspiring to work in television, she contacted producer Aaron Spelling after the film's release, who cast her in the television series "Models, Inc." To hone her comedic skills, she studied at the renowned improvisational theater troupe The Groundlings in Los Angeles. Her breakthrough came in 1996 when she was cast as Francesca "Fancy" Monroe in "The Jamie Foxx Show," showcasing her talent as a comedian.

Following the conclusion of "The Jamie Foxx Show" in 2001, Beauvais joined the cast of the police procedural "NYPD Blue."
