Biography of Garik Martirosyan
Garik Martirosyan is a Russian and Armenian entertainer, television host, comedian, artistic director, co-producer, and resident of the popular show "Comedy Club." He is also the creator of the "Liga Natsiy" project and the producer of "Shou News," "Nasha Russia," and "Smekh bez pravil." With a great sense of humor, he is a generator of new ideas and projects. Bright and talented, he has made a name for himself in the Russian show business and continues to entertain his fans with his creativity.
Early Life
Garik Yurievich Martirosyan was born in February 1974 in the sunny city of Yerevan, Armenia. As he was born on the 13th, his parents, out of superstition, recorded his birthday as the 14th of February. Since then, the artist celebrates his name day for two consecutive days. In his childhood, Garik was an incredibly active and restless child who broke dishes, played pranks, and caused chaos at home. He grew up with his younger brother, Levon. At the age of 6, his parents enrolled him in a music school, but he was soon expelled for his bad behavior. However, this expulsion did not stop the young musician from independently learning to play his favorite instruments – guitar, drums, and piano. He also started composing music. During his school years, Garik Martirosyan was not the first troublemaker in various pranks and mischief, but he was known for his vivid imagination. For example, in the first grade, he told his classmates that he was the grandson of Leonid Brezhnev. At a young age, the mischievous prankster also showed his artistic talent by playing the role of Archimedes in a school play in the sixth grade.
Medical Career
After finishing school, Garik Martirosyan enrolled at the Yerevan State Medical University, where he specialized in neurology and psychotherapy. For three years, the future star of "Comedy Club" worked as a practicing doctor, and he enjoyed this job. However, his artistic talent eventually took precedence. Today, Martirosyan has no regrets about the years he dedicated to medicine and psychiatry. He claims that his specialized education allows him to see through people. As for humor, Garik Martirosyan has always been a natural comedian, always making jokes, whether they were appropriate or not. Perhaps he would still be seeing patients if he hadn't met the team of KVN "Novye Armyane." This encounter became the defining moment in Garik's life, granting him a ticket to television.
KVN
The young neurologist met the KVN team in 1992. It was the year that marked the beginning of Garik Martirosyan's creative career. The Club of the Funny and Inventive (KVN) completely changed his life and determined the future path of the aspiring artist. In one interview, Garik Martirosyan shared memories of that time. According to him, shortly after entering medical university in Armenia, the country was engulfed in a military conflict (the war over Nagorno-Karabakh). The country experienced serious electricity shortages, gas shortages, and rationed bread. It was during this period that KVN began – young people would gather at someone's apartment, stock up on candles, and write humorous texts. "We made each other laugh. We had no other way out," says the artist.
In 1993, Garik became a player in the Armenian League of KVN, and in 1994, the team "Novye Armyane" was created based on this league. Martirosyan started as a regular player but became the captain of the team in 1997. He dedicated a total of nine years to the team "Novye Armyane." During this time, the team became the champion of the Highest League (1997), won the Summer Cup twice (1998, 2003), and received numerous awards at the Jurmala festival "Golosyashchiy KiVIN" and other KVN competitions. As Garik Martirosyan himself noted, the experience he gained from KVN in his youth became a real school of life for him.
Television Career
Garik Martirosyan first appeared on television in 1997 as a scriptwriter for the program "Dobry Vecher" with Igor Ugolnikov. Unbeknownst to him, he became an active participant in various shows. In 2004, Garik Martirosyan participated in the popular show "Ugaday Melodiyu" together with Polina Sibagatullina and Garik Kharlamov, reaching the third round of the game. His musical talent came in handy on several occasions. In the project "Dve Zvezdy," the comedian demonstrated excellent vocal skills and won with Larisa Dolina. In 2007, Garik Martirosyan tried his hand at hosting for the first time on the show "Minuta Slavy." This program gave him a sense of self-confidence. In the same year, Martirosyan participated in the recording of Pavel Volya's musical album "Respekt i Uvazhukha." In 2008, the comedy series "Nasha Russia" produced by "Comedy Club Production" premiered on TNT. The directors created the sketch show inspired by the British series "Little Britain." Garik was the producer of "Nasha Russia" and also appeared in the role of Rudik, the cameraman. In May 2008, the comedy project "Prozhektorperiskhilton" premiered on Channel One and continued until 2012. Garik Martirosyan was one of the hosts of the popular show alongside Ivan Urgant, Alexander Tsekalo, and Sergey Svetlakov. In 2017, after a five-year break, the beloved show returned to the screens, and Garik Martirosyan delighted viewers once again, jokingly explaining the long hiatus.
Martirosyan is not only a wonderful artist but also a producer. In this role, he first tested his skills in 2008 when the premiere of the feature film "Nasha Russia. Yaytsa sudby" took place. Garik Martirosyan not only produced the film but also wrote the screenplay. He proved his producer's talent once again when the new project called "Shou News" was released. As a host, Garik Martirosyan appeared on the music television project "Glavnaya Stsena" in 2015 and in the tenth season of the show "Tantsy so zvyozdami" on "Rossiya-1."
Comedy Club
Garik Martirosyan's career, which started with KVN, opened the doors to the Russian show business. In 2005, he and his fellow KVN teammates initiated a new comedy project.
The show called "Comedy Club," modeled after American stand-up shows, started airing on TNT. Garik was one of the producers while simultaneously performing in the show. Soon, Garik Martirosyan became a cult figure for the Russian youth.
Unfortunately, Martirosyan himself has always been modest when talking about the creation of the show. He claims that all the members of "Comedy Club" came together and decided to organize a comedy program, although his colleagues insist that he was the originator of this successful project.
It did not immediately make it onto television. The trial episode of "Comedy Club" sat on someone's desk for about a year before it was watched and approved. The sharp jokes of the residents (as they called themselves) did not appeal to everyone, but fortunately, the program made it to the air.
Today, it is difficult to find a person who has not heard of "Comedy Club," even though Garik Martirosyan initially did not believe in the success of this project. He showcased his excellent sense of humor not only as an artist in the project but also as a host, gaining fame for his introductions of the guests.
In 2016, Garik Martirosyan once again delighted his fans with hilarious skits in "Comedy Club." His performances in duets with Garik Kharlamov are particularly popular. Their parodies of "Casting for Eurovision" and "Conversation between Stalin and Beria" have garnered thousands of views on YouTube.
On New Year's Eve from 2016 to 2017, TNT viewers enjoyed the karaoke format of "Comedy Club." Garik Martirosyan not only made everyone laugh but also surprised the audience by performing the hit song "Patimeyker" by Rostov rapper Pika.
For the new season of the show "Nasha Russia," the residents of "Comedy Club" – Garik Martirosyan, Pavel Volya, Semen Slepakov, and Timur Batrutdinov – surprised their fans with a humorous song called "Nasha Rossiya – strashnaya sila."
In late 2016, the comedian delighted his fans with a surprise visit to Georgia. He shared the funniest jokes and stories from his life on the national comedy show. The video of the show was uploaded to YouTube and received a huge number of views.
In February 2017, Garik Martirosyan appeared in the 758th episode of the comedy show "Vecherniy Urgant," where he talked about what he had been doing for five years after the closure of the program "Prozhektorperiskhilton."
In February 2017, the artist celebrated his 43rd birthday, an age when a person is in the prime of their creative powers and full of new ideas and plans.
On April 1, 2018, Garik performed in his own show "Martirosyan Official" on TNT dedicated to April Fools' Day. Guests such as Egor Kreed were invited, but the bold behavior of the latter did not please the audience.
In the same year, the comedy film "Zomboiashchik" was released, in which Martirosyan played one of the main roles. Despite the abundance of various jokes, the film received criticism from viewers and failed to recoup its costs.
In 2019, he presented contestants on the talent show "Shchas Spoyu" on Channel One, which was for amateur vocalists.
In the spring of 2020, the musical show "Maska" premiered on NTV, with Martirosyan serving as a member of the jury. The format of the show originated from South Korea. Today, similar shows are broadcast in over 50 countries worldwide. The show immediately became popular in Russia, thanks in part to the notable judges – Garik Martirosyan, Valeriya, Philipp Kirkorov, Regina Todorenko, and Timur Rodriguez.
However, Garik has practically retired from the stage of his beloved "Comedy Club." The television host explained this decision by his exhaustion from constant filming and wearing makeup.
Personal Life
Garik Martirosyan is married, and his wife has KVN to thank for their relationship – the program played a crucial role in the personal life of the popular comedian. In his student years, his wife, Zhanna Levina, was a big fan of the team from the Stavropol Law University. In 1997, she went to Sochi to support her friends at the annual festival. It was there, at one of the parties, that Zhanna met Garik. Although they couldn't have a proper conversation at the time, it seems it was fate.
A year later, they met again, and a whirlwind romance began, culminating in their desire to get married. Garik Martirosyan and Zhanna Levina got married in Cyprus, with all the members of the KVN team "Novye Armyane" as witnesses.
Today, the couple has two children – a daughter named Jasmine, born in 2004, and a son named Daniel, born in 2009. Garik Martirosyan's personal life has been happy, as he and his wife have managed to keep their relationship private for 19 years, never giving the tabloids any material to work with.
The artist has not only created a strong family but has also provided well for them. In 2010, Garik Martirosyan, together with his colleagues Pavel Volya and Sergey Svetlakov, made it onto the Forbes list. In 2011, his estimated fortune was valued at $2.7 million, with a monthly income of approximately $200,000.
Football is one of Garik Martirosyan's long-standing passions. He is a fan of Moscow's "Lokomotiv" team. Recently, the resident of "Comedy Club" made a promise before the match between "Manchester United" and "Tottenham" – if his favorite team, which includes Henrikh Mkhitaryan, was leading, he would shave his head bald.
"Manchester United" won, and according to the terms of the bet, Martirosyan became bald, proving it with a photo of his new "hairstyle" on Instagram.
