Garnik Nanagoulian: Armenian Statesman and Diplomat
Early Life and EducationGarnik Ashotovich Nanagoulian was born on January 25, 1953, in Yerevan, Armenia. He excelled academically, graduating with a gold medal from Physics and Mathematics School No. 132 in 1970. He then pursued higher education at Yerevan State University, earning a degree in physics in 1975.
Career in Academia and Government
After graduating, Nanagoulian worked at a military-industrial enterprise while simultaneously serving as a teacher at his alma mater. From 1978 to 1982, he worked as the Head of the Science Department at the Central Committee of the Komsomol of the Armenian SSR.
Diplomatic Career
Nanagoulian's diplomatic career began in 1982 when he studied at the Moscow Diplomatic Academy. From 1985 to 1992, he served in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Armenian SSR.
Ambassadorial Appointments
In 1992, Nanagoulian was appointed as Armenia's Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the United States. In February 1996, he became Armenia's Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Canada.
Minister of Commerce
Returning to Armenia in 1996, Nanagoulian served as Minister of Trade, Services, and Tourism. In 1997, he was appointed Minister of Trade and Industry, a position he held until 1998.
Executive Director of the Armenian Aid Fund
Since 1998, Nanagoulian has served as the Executive Director of the Armenian Aid Fund, an organization dedicated to humanitarian assistance and development in Armenia.
