Early Life and Education

Garrett Hedlund was born on September 3, 1984, in Roseau, Minnesota. Growing up on a farm in rural Minnesota, he was the third of three children before his parents divorced. Hedlund is of Swedish descent.

In the ninth grade, Hedlund's family relocated to Scottsdale, Arizona, where he began acting lessons with a tutor. While attending high school, he participated in wrestling and football, skills that later proved beneficial in his acting career.

Acting Debut and Rise to Fame

After graduating high school, Hedlund knew he wanted to pursue acting. He moved to Los Angeles, graduating a semester early to follow his dreams. Initially, he worked as a print model for magazines like "L.L. Bean" and "Teen Magazine."

Just a month after arriving in Los Angeles, Hedlund landed his breakthrough role as Patroclus in the epic historical film "Troy" (2004), starring alongside Brad Pitt. The role required him to gain 30 pounds of muscle, an accomplishment he repeated for "Friday Night Lights" (2004) and reversed for "Four Brothers" (2005).

Hedlund's performance in "Troy" earned him a nomination for "Choice Breakout Movie Star – Male" at the Teen Choice Awards. With his earnings from the film, he purchased an apartment in Los Angeles.

Continued Success and Notable Roles

Following "Troy," Hedlund went on to star in "Friday Night Lights" (2004), playing a member of a high school football team. Notably, his idol Tim McGraw, whose music had been a staple on the radio in his childhood, portrayed his character's father in the film.

In "Four Brothers" (2005), Hedlund took on one of the lead roles as a brother seeking revenge for his murdered mother. He also appeared in "Eragon" (2005) and the thriller "Death Sentence" (2006).
