Biography of Garth Hudson

Garth Hudson is a renowned Canadian rock musician known for his unique contribution to the sound of the band "The Band." He was born on August 2, 1937, in Windsor, Ontario, into a musical family. His mother played piano, accordion, and sang, while his father was a drummer who played saxophone, clarinet, flute, and piano. In 1940, the family moved to London, Ontario, where Hudson attended Broughdale Public School and Medway High School before graduating from the University of Western Ontario.

Early Career and The Hawks

At the age of 12, Hudson was already performing with professional groups, and at 11, he wrote his first song. In 1958, he became a member of the rock and roll group "The Capers." In 1961, at the age of 24, Hudson joined "The Hawks." He began focusing on playing the organ and became one of the few musicians to merge rock and roll with rhythm and blues. By 1963, "The Hawks" had become a serious group, recording and performing extensively.

Collaboration with Bob Dylan and The Band

In 1966, Hudson and the band met Bob Dylan and accompanied him on tours in the United States and the United Kingdom. They settled in a house in West Saugerties, New York, near Woodstock, and Dylan frequented the place. In 1968, they recorded their first album, "Music from Big Pink," under the name "The Band," which featured Hudson's unique sound. The group continued to tour extensively before giving their final concert on Thanksgiving Day in 1976 at Winterland in San Francisco. They released albums such as "The Last Waltz" and "Islands" before disbanding.

Solo Work and Reunion with The Band

After the disbandment of The Band, Hudson got married and settled on a ranch in Malibu. He continued to actively work as a musician, collaborating with artists such as Emmylou Harris, Van Morrison, Leonard Cohen, and others. In 1983, The Band reunited with some lineup changes, and they resumed touring and released three more albums. In 1989, Hudson's name was inducted into the Juno Hall of Fame, and in 1994, he was honored in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Later Career

In 2001, Hudson released his first solo album, "The Sea To The North," and received the Canada South Blues Society's Lifetime Achievement Award. In 2002, he formed the band "Burrito Deluxe" with former member of the "Flying Burrito Brothers," Sneaky Pete Kleinow. The band recorded two albums, "Georgia Peach" and "The Whole Enchilada." In 2005, Hudson formed "The Best!" with his wife, who provided vocals. They released the album "Live at the Wolf." Hudson continues to be in high demand and performs with various artists such as Billy Kid (The Lost Cause), Neko Case (Fox Confessor Brings the Flood), Teddy Thompson (Separate Ways), The Secret Machines (Ten Silver Drops), The Sadies (Live 2006), The Lemonheads, Yesterday's News, and others.
