Biography of Mike Weir
Canadian golfer Mike Weir made history as the first left-handed champion of the Masters. Only New Zealander Bob Charles, who, like Weir, preferred to hold the club with his left hand, won the Open Championship in 1963 - one of the stages of the Grand Slam.
Weir achieved a sensational victory at the Masters tournament, the first event of the Grand Slam season held at Augusta National Golf Club in Georgia, United States. He managed to outplay the world-famous golfer Tiger Woods, who believed he would win the tournament for the fourth time and etch his name into its history. Weir became the first left-handed champion in Masters history, following in the footsteps of Bob Charles.
This victory marked Weir's sixth and undoubtedly most significant win of his career. In accordance with tradition, the previous champion, Tiger Woods, draped a green jacket over Weir's shoulders. The victory came with a substantial monetary reward, as Weir's bank account swelled with over a million dollars. In just three and a half months into the season, Weir, who had already won several tournaments, earned nearly 3.5 million dollars. He topped the list of highest-paid golfers on the American Tour in 2003.
However, surpassing Tiger Woods, the wealthiest athlete in the world, may be a difficult feat for Weir. Woods has accumulated "green" on his accounts, with a sum very close to a billion.
