Marc Leishman: A Golfing Star Down Under
Early Life and Amateur CareerMarc Leishman was born in Warrnambool, Victoria, Australia. From a young age, he displayed exceptional talent on the golf course. At just 13 years old, he won the Warrnambool Club Championship alongside his father. Leishman's success continued in his teenage years, with victories in the prestigious Victorian Junior Masters, South Australian Junior Masters, and Victorian Boys Championship.
Professional Career
In 2005, Leishman turned professional. He made his mark on the Von Nida Tour in 2006, winning two tournaments and securing the Order of Merit title. In 2007, he joined the Nationwide Tour, where he secured his first title in 2008 at the WNB Golf Classic. His impressive performances earned him a PGA Tour card for the 2009 season.
PGA Tour Breakthrough
Leishman's PGA Tour debut was memorable. He was named Rookie of the Year in 2009 after recording three top-10 finishes, including a runner-up finish to Tiger Woods at the BMW Championship. He also qualified for the Tour Championship, finishing the year 53rd on the money list.
Consistency and Major Contention
Over the next few years, Leishman established himself as a consistent performer on the PGA Tour, consistently finishing within the top 100 on the money list. He made significant strides at the BMW Championship in both 2010 and 2011. In 2012, he clinched his maiden PGA Tour victory at the Travelers Championship, overcoming a six-stroke deficit with a record-breaking final round of 62.
Leishman continued to challenge for major titles, most notably at the 2013 Masters Tournament. He shared the lead after the first round but ultimately finished tied for fourth place, just four strokes off the winning score.
More PGA Tour Victories
Leishman's hard work paid off with two more PGA Tour triumphs in 2017. He won the Arnold Palmer Invitational in March and then set a tournament record with his victory at the BMW Championship in September. In 2018, he captured the CIMB Classic with a tournament-record score of 26 under par.
International Success and Zurich Classic Triumph
In 2019, Leishman represented the International Team at the Presidents Cup in Australia. He went 1-2-2 in the event. In 2020, he added the Farmers Insurance Open to his resume.
In April 2021, Leishman made history by winning the Zurich Classic of New Orleans alongside compatriot Cameron Smith. The duo defeated Louis Oosthuizen and Charl Schwartzel in a thrilling playoff.
Personal Life
Leishman is married to Audrey, with whom he has three children. They reside in Virginia Beach, Virginia. In 2015, Audrey suffered a life-threatening illness, but thanks to prompt medical intervention and the support of her family, she made a remarkable recovery. The Leishmans have since established the "Start Again" Foundation to assist families with medical expenses.
