Gaston de Chasseloup-Laubat, a prominent French auto racer, was born into an aristocratic family, with ancestry tracing back to François de Chasseloup-Laubat, a Napoleonic general.
Speed Records
On December 18, 1898, Chasseloup-Laubat etched his name in history by setting the first officially recorded speed record of 63.149 km/h in an electric car, the "Jeantaud Duc." A month later, on January 17, 1899, he pushed the limits further, achieving a speed of 66.65 km/h, triumphing in a series of races against Camille Jenatzy.
However, Jenatzy reclaimed the record within days, setting a new mark of 92.69 km/h on March 4, 1899. The elusive record was finally established by Jenatzy on April 29, 1899, reaching a speed of 100 km/h with an average of 105 km/h, a remarkable feat that stood for three years.
