Biography of Gautam Adani
Gautam Adani, an Indian real estate tycoon, is ranked 91st on Forbes's list of the world's richest people. His net worth is estimated at $9.3 billion. Adani comes from a large family, with seven siblings. Due to the difficult life in their hometown of Tarad, his parents decided to move to the northern state of Gujarat in search of a better livelihood. It was in the city of Ahmedabad that Gautam Adani was born on June 24, 1962.
Early Life and Education
When it was time for Gautam to attend school, his parents enrolled him in one of the schools in Ahmedabad. After completing ten grades, Adani went to Mumbai, the most populous city in India, with only a few hundred rupees in his pocket. In Mumbai, he found a job as a diamond sorter at Mahindra Brothers. After working at the company for two years and reaching the age of eighteen, Gautam started his own brokerage business, earning his first hundred thousand rupees.
Entry into the Business World
In 1981, Gautam's elder brother purchased a plastic manufacturing company and asked him to be the manager. This marked Adani's entry into the world of big business. The company, led by Adani, focused on importing polyvinyl chloride (PVC), a key ingredient in plastic production. With the economic liberalization and the reduction of customs duties on various goods, Adani's company reaped huge profits.
Expansion into Real Estate
Later on, Gautam Adani ventured into the real estate industry. In 1998, he invested in the construction of Mundra Port, one of the first private sector ports on the western coast of India. Adani is married to Priti Adani, a dentist by profession and a leading member of the Adani company's board of directors. They have two sons, Karan and Jit. Karan, who is now twenty years old, obtained a master's degree in economics and management from Purdue University in the United States. The younger son, Jit, is currently ten years old.
Personal Life and Interests
Gautam Adani owns two private jets, the Beechcraft and Hawker, which were purchased in 2005 and 2007, respectively. He is passionate about yoga. In 2007, Adani added $4.3 billion to his personal wealth when Adani Mundra Port and Special Economic Zone, owned by him, saw an 81.3% increase in the value of the shares on the first day of trading in Mumbai, raising the value of his family's 81.3% stake to $7.9 billion.
