Walter VI: Count, Duke, and Constable
Count of BrienneWalter VI, born into the illustrious de Brienne family, inherited the titles of Count of Brienne and Lecce upon his father's death. Through his grandmother, Isabella de la Roche, he also claimed the titular Duchy of Athens in 1311.
Campaign in Lithuania and Conquest of Athens
In 1329, Walter joined King John the Blind on his expedition against Lithuania. Upon his return, he embarked on a mission to establish himself as the true ruler of Athens, where he had been a nominal sovereign.
Duke of Athens and Ruler of Florence
In 1342, Walter became the governor of Florence on behalf of King Robert of Naples. However, he was expelled from the city after an uprising the following year.
Return to France and Royal Service
Upon his return to France in 1347, Walter was appointed governor of Vermandois, Picardy, and Artois by King Philip VI. In 1356, he was elevated to the prestigious position of Constable of France.
Battle of Poitiers and Aftermath
As Constable, Walter led the French forces at the Battle of Poitiers. Tragically, he fell in battle during the conflict. His legacy as a loyal and valiant commander lived on after his untimely demise.
Marriage and Offspring
Walter VI married twice. His first wife, Margaret of Anjou, bore him a son named Walter, who died in childhood. His second wife, Jeanne de Brienne, bore him two daughters: Margaret and Jeanne.
