Early Life and Education

Valérie Boyer was born in 1962 in Bourges, France, to a Franco-Algerian family recently repatriated from Algeria. Her father worked in international trade. She attended preparatory classes at Lycée Marcelin-Berthelot in Saint-Maur-des-Fossés and graduated in 1984 from the Institute of Political Studies d'Aix-en-Provence.

Career in Social Services and Politics

Boyer began her career as a social worker. In 1997, she joined the Regional Hospitalization Agency of Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur. She entered politics during the 2001 municipal elections in Marseille.

Election to the National Assembly

On June 17, 2007, Boyer was elected to the 13th term of the French National Assembly for the 8th district of Bouches-du-Rhône, defeating incumbent Christophe Masse (PS) in the second round with 50.24% of the vote in a traditionally "left-wing" district. She was appointed Secretary of UMP for Health.

Political Controversies

In August 2011, Boyer visited Nagorno-Karabakh without Azerbaijan's permission, which led to her being declared persona non grata by the Azerbaijani Ministry of Foreign Affairs. On December 22, 2011, the French National Assembly passed a bill introduced by Boyer criminalizing the denial of the Armenian genocide. The passage of the law created tensions between France and Turkey, and Boyer subsequently faced various attacks.
