Early Life and Career
Saffire is an American blues singer and guitarist who was born on March 21, 1944, in Fredericksburg, Virginia. Her parents were jazz musicians. Saffire pursued higher education and earned a bachelor's degree in biology from Boston University. She worked as a biochemist at Rockefeller University and as a bacteriologist at Harlem Hospital.
Activism and Return to Fredericksburg
In the 1960s, Saffire actively participated in the civil rights movement, including the Black Power Movement in New York and the Harlem Self-Defense Committee. She married and had a son during this time. After her divorce in 1970, she returned to Fredericksburg and worked as a drama teacher and taught biology and chemistry at a local high school. In 1982, she was recognized as Virginia's Teacher of the Year.
Musical Journey
In the mid-1970s, Saffire met Anne Rabson, who taught her how to play the guitar. In 1984, they formed a duo that eventually became known as "Saffire – The Uppity Blues Women" when a bassist joined the group in 1988. Their traditional acoustic blues have earned them critical acclaim as one of the best current female blues bands.
