Gayle King, an American editor-at-large for 'O, The Oprah Magazine' and Oprah Winfrey's best friend, was born on December 28, 1954, in Chevy Chase, Maryland. Her father was an electrical engineer and her mother was a homemaker. Due to her father's job, Gayle spent several years of her childhood in Turkey, where she attended an American school. The family later returned to Maryland. King graduated from the University of Maryland in 1976 with a dual degree in psychology and sociology.

After moving to Kansas City, Missouri, Gayle worked as a reporter and anchor for WDAF-TV. In 1981, she was hired to host a news program on WFSB in Hartford, Connecticut, where she stayed for 18 years. In 1991, King briefly co-hosted the daytime talk show 'Cover to Cover' on NBC with Robin Wagner, but the show was canceled. In 1997, she was offered her own talk show, 'The Gayle King Show,' which later went off the air due to low ratings.

It is said that when Gayle no longer wanted to compete with her best friend Oprah, she became an editor-at-large for 'O, The Oprah Magazine' in 1999. She has also worked as a special correspondent for 'The Oprah Winfrey Show' and 'Good Morning America.' In September 2006, King started hosting 'The Gayle King Show' on XM Satellite Radio.

Rumors have circulated that Gayle King was considered as a replacement for Star Jones Reynolds in 2006 and Rosie O'Donnell in 'The View,' but neither of these came to fruition. According to other rumors, King was a potential replacement for Elizabeth Hasselbeck on 'The View' in May 2009 if Hasselbeck were to leave the show. Gayle confirmed that she would have her own show on the Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN), owned by her friend, where she planned to discuss various topics related to life and style.

Gayle King has two children. Her daughter Kirby graduated from Stanford University in 2008, and her son William graduated from Duke University on May 10, 2009. Standing at a height of 1.78m, King prefers to date men who are taller than her. She believes that taller individuals are more likely to be sensitive to the issues faced by tall people. According to her preferences, her partner should be over 1.93m tall, although she would not turn away from a man who is at least 10cm taller than her.

In addition to her friendship with Oprah, Gayle is also friends with Howard Stern, despite Stern and Winfrey constantly criticizing each other. As of 2009, Gayle King resides in the same Manhattan building as Robin Quivers, Stern's longtime friend and colleague.
