Early Life and Career
Gelson Fernandes, a Swiss footballer of Cape Verdean descent, was born on September 2, 1986, in Praia, Cape Verde. At the age of nine, he moved to Switzerland with his family.
Youth Career
Fernandes began his footballing journey at the age of nine, joining the youth academy of FC Sion. He spent eight years at the club, honing his skills and rising through the ranks.
Professional Career
FC Sion (2002-2007)Fernandes made his senior debut for FC Sion in the 2002-03 season. During his time with the Swiss club, he won the Swiss Cup in 2005-06.
Manchester City (2007-2008)
In July 2007, Fernandes was signed by Premier League club Manchester City for a fee of £4.2 million. However, he struggled to break into the first team and was loaned out to AS Saint-Étienne the following year.
Loans and Transfers
After his loan spell at Saint-Étienne, Fernandes was loaned out to various clubs, including Chievo, Leicester City, and Udinese. In 2012, he joined Sporting CP on a permanent deal before returning to Sion on loan.
SC Freiburg (2013-2014)
In 2013, Fernandes signed for German Bundesliga side SC Freiburg. He spent one season with the club before moving to French club Stade Rennais in 2014.
Eintracht Frankfurt (2017-Present)
Fernandes joined Eintracht Frankfurt in June 2017 and has since become a key player for the German club.
International Career
Fernandes captained the Swiss U-21 team and made his senior international debut in 2007. He was part of the Swiss squad that reached the last 16 at the 2008 European Championship. He has also represented Switzerland at the 2010 and 2014 FIFA World Cups.
