A Childhood Passion

Gemma Kang was born on May 21, 1954, in Masan, Korea. Her family was not very wealthy, and in her childhood, her parents discovered her passion for creating clothes. Young Gemma would arrange clothes for her paper dolls since her parents couldn't afford to buy her real ones.

A Journey to America

In 1969, Kang immigrated to the United States with her family. She obtained her education in 1979 from the Chicago Art Institute. In 1984, she married Charles Chang-Lim, but they divorced in 1994.

A Vision for the Unconventional

Gemma Kang is a well-known figure in the fashion world. Her collections are designed for American women who are not extremely wealthy but aspire to stand out from the crowd. Kang's costumes and dresses are always original and unconventional, although they are based on traditional templates of everyday clothing. Her close friend and collaborator is the designer Schiaparelli, known for his clothing that stands out not for its brightness but rather for its unusual forms and unexpected accessories.

A Partnership with Charles Chang-Lim

Gemma Kang collaborates with her former husband, Charles Chang-Lim, who has his own high-end clothing line. For many years, Kang's office was located on 7th Avenue in Manhattan, New York. All of her clothing production was done there, and Kang was not interested in expanding her production facilities outside of Manhattan, which ultimately affected the company's profits. Kang remained faithful to the old traditional school of clothing production and did not embrace new innovations in manufacturing. She held the same philosophy when her company's offices moved to SoHo.

An Imaginative Designer

Gemma Kang has an immense imagination. She turns ordinary things into something original and unconventional. For example, she creates whimsical tweed jackets and "military" style coats with unusual textures. Gemma strives to convey a new vision of non-standard clothing, to change the perception of color and form.

A Commercial Project

In the late 1990s, Gemma Kang's collections took on a softer and calmer character. The fabrics became more delicate and elegant. This was a commercial project, and Gemma downsized her staff, resulting in a decrease in the quantity of products produced. Currently, clothing from this designer can be purchased in several prestigious department stores at a relatively high price.
