Early Life and Career
Xabier Andrinúa Orúe was born on November 7, 1964, in Bilbao, Basque Country, Spain. He began his football career at Athletic Bilbao's youth academy.
Professional Career
Athletic BilbaoAndrinúa made his debut for Athletic Bilbao's first team in 1983, but initially had limited playing time. In 1985, he was loaned to Real Valladolid, where he played regularly. Upon his return to Bilbao, Andrinúa became a key player, contributing to their 1984 Primera División title and Copa del Rey victory. He assumed the captaincy from Andoni Goikoetxea and held it until 1995. However, his performances declined in the following seasons, leading to his retirement in 1997.
National Team
Andrinúa was a member of Spain's UEFA European Under-21 Championship-winning squad in 1986. He made his senior international debut in 1987 and participated in UEFA Euro 1988 and the 1990 FIFA World Cup. In total, he played 28 matches for Spain, scoring two goals. He also represented the unofficial Basque Country team three times.
Retirement and Legacy
After retiring from football, Andrinúa pursued a successful career as a sports commentator. He remains a revered figure at Athletic Bilbao, having played more than 300 league matches for the club and winning the Copa del Rey in 1984.
