Francisco Serrano, 1st Marquis de Miravelles

Early Life and Career

Francisco Serrano was a renowned Spanish general who served during the 19th century. As the 1st Marquis de Miravelles, he played a pivotal role in several military campaigns and rose through the ranks of the Spanish army.

Moroccan Expedition and Carlist Wars

In 1860, Serrano distinguished himself during the Spanish expedition against Morocco. His exploits earned him recognition and set the stage for his future military achievements. Fourteen years later, in 1874, General Serrano was entrusted with the command of troops fighting against the Carlists.

Under his leadership, the Spanish army liberated Pamplona from the Carlist blockade, captured Vitoria, and inflicted a crushing defeat on the Carlists at Villareal. Serrano's relentless pursuit pushed the Carlists back to the French border, effectively ending the war.

Minister of War and Notable Accomplishments

In 1884, Serrano was appointed Minister of War under Prime Minister Antonio Cánovas del Castillo. During his tenure, he played a critical role in shaping Spain's military policies and reforms. Notably, Serrano's unwavering loyalty to the Crown and his refusal to participate in any pronunciamientos set him apart from many military officers during that era.
