Early Life and Military Career
Kanichiro Tashiro was born in Saga Prefecture, Japan, in 1881. In 1902, he graduated from the Imperial Japanese Army Academy and in 1912 from the Army War College.
Military Service
Tashiro rose through the ranks of the Imperial Japanese Army, attaining the rank of colonel in 1923. He commanded the 60th Infantry Regiment in 1924 and the 8th Infantry Regiment in 1925. In 1929, he was promoted to major general and became commander of the 30th Infantry Brigade. In 1933, he was appointed lieutenant general and served as deputy commandant of the Army War College from 1933 to 1935.
Command Assignments
Tashiro commanded the 12th Division from 1935 to 1936 and the Imperial Guard Division from 1936 to 1937. In early 1937, he was appointed deputy inspector general of military training.
China Incident
On July 12, 1937, during the Marco Polo Bridge Incident, Kiyoshi Katsuki replaced Tashiro, who was unexpectedly hospitalized, as commander of the Garrison Army in China. From August 26, 1937, he became commander of the 1st Army, participating in the Beiping-Hankou Operation.
Retirement
On May 30, 1938, Tashiro was recalled to the General Staff. Two months later, he retired from military service.
