Biography of Gene Rayburn
Gene Rayburn, born Eugene Rubessa, was an American actor who achieved greatest popularity from 1962 to 1969 as the host of the show "The Match Game". However, he often faced criticism from his colleagues for the lack of jokes. During this time, Gene also frequently appeared on shows such as "What's My Line?" and "To Tell the Truth". He also worked for a long time on the radio show "Monitor" at NBS radio station.
Early Life and Education
Gene Rayburn was born into a Croatian immigrant family in Christopher, Illinois. After graduating from Robert Lindblom Math & Science Academy, he attended Knox College, where he participated in productions such as "Robert of Sicily" and "Mrs. Wiggs of the Cabbage Patch".
Personal Life
In 1940, Gene Rayburn married Helen Ticknor, with whom he had a child. Despite having a family, he volunteered to serve in the U.S. Air Force during World War II. Gene and Helen remained married until her death in 1996.
Career
Before his television career, Gene Rayburn frequently appeared on the radio as a DJ. He was part of a popular New York morning show alongside Dee Finch and Jack Lescoulie. Several years later, he was offered a role in the Broadway musical "Bye Bye Birdie".
Gene made his first television appearance as the host of "Steve Allen's Tonight" and got acquainted with the creators of game shows Mark Goodson and Bill Todman. This eventually led to his role as the host of "The Name's the Same". In 1955, he temporarily replaced the main host of "Make the Connection" and gained recognition. After that, he received invitations to host several other shows.
In 1959, Gene Rayburn appeared in the comedy film "It Happened to Jane" but requested that his name not be credited. Throughout the 1960s, he frequently appeared on "The Tonight Show" and unexpectedly guest-starred in several episodes of "The Match Game" in 1967.
Later Career and Death
Gene Rayburn continued to participate in various TV shows, including "What's My Line?" and "To Tell the Truth". He also acted in several series, such as "One Life to Live", "Love Boat", and "Fantasy Island". During the 1980s, he joined the show "Entertainment Tonight" but was fired after his real age was revealed.
His final on-screen appearance was in 1998, during the 25th anniversary celebration of "The Match Game". After his death in 1999 at the age of 81, an interview with him was uploaded to the Game Show Network website and later aired on the show "Match Game Blankathon". Gene Rayburn's body was cremated, and his ashes were buried in his daughter's backyard, according to his wishes. He was posthumously honored with an award from the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences.
