Early Life
Evgeni Valachovic was born on a frosty winter day in Moscow, Russia, on January 22, 1917. His parents, a Czech father and a Swiss mother, brought him to the world amidst the tumultuous backdrop of the Russian Revolution. Just two short years later, the young family packed their belongings and sought refuge in the serene city of Geneva, Switzerland.
Football Career
From an early age, Valachovic displayed an unwavering passion for the beautiful game of football. He honed his skills in the youth ranks of Servette FC, before making his senior debut for the club in 1935. Over the course of his illustrious career, he graced the pitches for Urania Genève Sport and BSC Young Boys, leaving an indelible mark on Swiss football.
International Debut and World Cup Glory
Despite not yet possessing Swiss citizenship, Valachovic was granted the exceptional honor of representing his adopted country at the international level. In 1937, he made his debut for the Swiss national team in a match against Austria. His moment of glory arrived at the 1938 FIFA World Cup, where he etched his name in football history by scoring a goal against Germany.
Post-Football Career
Upon hanging up his boots, Valachovic transitioned seamlessly into a successful career in economics, working for the financial administration of Geneva. In parallel, he shared his football knowledge and expertise as a coach for the club Étoile-Sporting.
Enduring Legacy and Recognition
Valachovic's extraordinary life and career were immortalized on film by renowned director Paul Klee in the poignant documentary "Valachovich's Dream."
