Biography of Gennadiy Akselrod
Early Life and Business VenturesGennadiy Akselrod, a Ukrainian businessman from Dnipropetrovsk, was born on August 6, 1967. He gained a reputation in business circles as a highly educated and knowledgeable individual, known for being reserved and not seeking public attention. Akselrod was the Vice President of the industrial financial group "Sparta" and the owner of the construction company "Akselrod Estate." He owned several properties, including the Axelhof Hotel and the shopping centers "Passage," "Atrium," "Europe," and "Library."
Community Involvement
Akselrod was an active participant in the Jewish community of Dnipropetrovsk. He co-authored the concept and led the construction of the largest Jewish community center in the world, "Menora," in Dnipropetrovsk. He was also one of the largest benefactors of the "Golden Rose" synagogue. Akselrod's philanthropy and involvement in the Jewish community were highly regarded.
Tragic Incident and Legacy
On September 17, 2010, Gennadiy Akselrod suffered minor injuries in an explosion at the "Pepperoni" restaurant in Dnipropetrovsk. He was having lunch at the establishment with friends, Gennadiy Korban (Chairman of the Board of Directors of Slavutich Capital) and Oleg Levyn (co-owner of the Dnipropetrovsk Switch Plant). Akselrod informed journalists at the time that the intended target of the attack was Korban, not himself.
Sadly, Gennadiy Akselrod was fatally shot on April 14, 2012, at approximately 4:30 pm in the center of Dnipropetrovsk, near his residence on Gogol Street. He had arrived at his home in his own car when an unknown assailant on a bicycle fired shots with a silencer at the windshield. Akselrod exited the vehicle and attempted to flee towards Karl Marx Avenue, but the perpetrator fired several more shots, hitting him in the head. The businessman tragically died at the scene.
Gennadiy Akselrod was laid to rest at the Surzko-Lytovske Cemetery in Dnipropetrovsk. In 2007, a pre-death monument to him was erected on Ekaterinoslav Boulevard in front of the Bosporus Trade and Office Center in Dnipropetrovsk. Akselrod even organized a competition for the best photo with his own monument, showcasing his sense of humor and self-awareness.
